Chickens!

ree

We are so close to beginning our chicken sustainability project! This project will be a key source of income for the ministry, enabling us to both support families in need and invest in future ministry development.

Through a few generous donations, we've been able to complete the chicken house, a structure large enough to accommodate up to 1000 chickens. We have the feeders, drinkers, and warmers, and Simon, a trusted member of the Daystar Team, is ready to care for the birds. We've even put down our payment for 300 baby chicks!

We plan to start out with 500 chicks, which will start laying eggs within about six months. There is a strong market for eggs in Iganga, many of which are exported to Kenya. At the end of about ten months, the chickens' laying will slow down, and we will sell the birds themselves. Since these particular birds' eggs won't hatch into chicks, we will then start the cycle again with a new batch of chicks.

We are now in the process of raising money for the last 200 chicks, vaccinations, and chicken feed for the months before the chickens start laying. The corn crops at the Daystar Farm are also thriving and will soon be a helpful source of food for the chickens.

We're thankful to Angels Care Schools for their generous donation of both construction funds and the first of our chickens! Join us in getting this sustainability project off the ground--$20 will feed 20 chickens for a month!
